IT for Healthcare Specialization- UCI 3094

This course is designed for those with previous experience or training in IT Support. After successful completion, graduates will be well-prepared to leverage healthcare IT skills in their current roles while also having set the groundwork should they wish to pursue intermediate and advanced courses in health information systems, healthcare cybersecurity, and healthcare data analytics.

Instructor-Led

This 3-week course is designed to introduce learners to the critical intersection of healthcare and information technology, covering the U.S. healthcare ecosystem, compliance frameworks such as HIPAA and HITECH, security and risk management, clinical technology systems, and healthcare data governance with an emphasis on analytics and AI. This specialized entry-level course is designed for individuals who have completed previous experience or training in IT Support and are seeking to expand their expertise into healthcare environments. Through an array of interactive labs, captivating lectures, and collaborative projects, individuals will troubleshoot healthcare IT systems, apply compliance and security standards, and design technology solutions that improve clinical workflows and protect patient data. Upon successful course completion, graduates will be well-prepared to leverage healthcare IT skills in their current roles while also having set the groundwork should they wish to pursue intermediate and advanced courses in health information systems, healthcare cybersecurity, and healthcare data analytics.

What you’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of all course requirements, learners will

  • Analyze the U.S. healthcare ecosystem, clinical workflows, and core health IT systems to determine their role in patient care and operations.
  • Apply HIPAA, HITECH, and Joint Commission compliance requirements to healthcare IT security, risk management, and incident response.
  • Design secure healthcare technology environments, including EHR platforms, billing systems, and segmented network infrastructures.
  • Evaluate healthcare data governance practices, interoperability standards (HL7/FHIR), and modern data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks) for PHI protection.
  • Demonstrate effective IT support skills by troubleshooting clinical technologies, communicating with healthcare staff, and responding to simulated system failures.
